Pre-Conference Workshops: 22nd March 2010

8:30 – 11:00 Workshop A: IP Portfolio Valuation and Evaluation to Balance Risks and Revenue Potential

In any market scenario, senior IP professionals must decide how to best manage existing IP portfolios (acquire, abandon, license etc.) They must also make informed decisions about the probable risk / reward ratio of their IP. To make a sound decision, they need to constantly ask themselves: how much is my intellectual asset worth? The process of managing existing intellectual assets and deciding what IP to invest in is difficult and complex. Conducting a proper analysis of your IP portfolio and those of you competitors is an essential key to understanding strategic risks to organisations, regardless if they are looking into streamlining or divesting or otherwise generating value of their intellectual assets.

This workshop will show how to:

  • evaluate & estimate the value of IP against key strategic objectives
  • apply the valuation of IP gap/risk analysis to gain in-depth understanding of your IP portfolio
  • identify dormant revenue potential and opportunities to commercialise, abandon sell or strategically use your IP assets

11:15 – 14:00 Workshop B: Enforcing & Protecting your IP in China: practical measures*

Being the largest potential consumer base in the world, China is one of the key markets for European and Nordic organisations willing to leverage a strong consumer market and reduce production and R&D costs. However, to secure a return on their investment, companies need to mitigate and balance any risks to their intellectual assets.

This workshop will give you an analysis of:

  • the cultural and policy environment in China
  • the recent changes in Chinese IP laws and how they affect your IP protection
  • practical ways to defend and protect against infringement in China
  • the effectiveness of litigating in China: practical cases

14:15 – 17:00 Workshop C: Alternative Means to Generate IP Value: Contractual and Negotiation Aspects

Understanding the strategic and commercial aspects of IPR are fundamental factors for commercialising and boosting the value of your patent portfolio. More then ever, IP Senior professionals face the challenge of balancing business objectives in contract negotiations with the risks involved in protecting their IP. This workshop will give you a clear understanding of alternatives to generate value from your IP, including contractual and strategic areas to observe during the negotiation of your agreements.

By giving you a thorough understanding of IP issues, you will be able to:

  • bring a greater value to your business by identifying opportunities to commercialise and develop your patent portfolio
  • manage the complexity of issues during negotiations to maximise the financial benefit of your organisation
  • prevent the erosion of your IPR by understanding where the risks lie and what alternatives you may have to mitigate them
